Football NFL Packers

Summer is Coming. Football is Coming. Packers Updates Are Here.

Time to round up some Packers news as of late and put it all in one place for you. First, let’s start off with my biggest impact rookie of the year for the Packers – Darnell Savage Jr.

The Packers traded up in this years draft to get Savage at 21. A safety out of Maryland, he was the first DB taken off the board in this year draft at a position the Packers desperately needed help at. Well it didn’t take long but the Packers aren’t throwing around rookie bullshit and Savage is running with the first team out of the gates.

The common thing coming out of camp about him? Is how smart he is. I fucking love it. I’m giddy. I cannot wait to see how him and Adrian Amos play together in Mike Pettines defense. Here’s Tramon Williams on what he thinks of Savage.

We all know Aaron Rodgers was on Game of Thrones this season and basically everybody got it wrong about who it was. Some thought he was a Lannister archer. Some thought he was a guy getting roasted by the dragon.. Nope, he was just some random guy helping a lady in the background before getting roasted by the dragon. Great cameo, great actor. His character needs a spin off. Here was Rodgers thoughts on the ending of Thrones, which I think most people agree with.

More importantly, Aaron Rodgers likes what he sees in front of him – specifically new free agent Billy Turner.

“The guy I have to say I’m really excited about is Bill, at right guard,” Rodgers said after practice. “Just his presence in the huddle. He’s a big dude. He’s a no-nonsense guy but he’s also got a really dry sense of humor. He’s been a great addition to that group. As a quarterback, the protection is so important, as I look across the line, I feel great about that first five.”

This really excites me because the Packers really do have one of the best tackle tandems in the league (when healthy) and one of the best centers. Their guards last year were not so good and they kept shuffling guys in and out. This year, Turner looks to solidify that RG position. As far as the RG situation goes, I think that will be decided in training camp. Even so, the Packers have good depth behind their starters in Lucas Patrick, Justin McCray, Jason Spriggs who have all seen time and then they have the rookie Elgton Jenkins (2nd round pick) and 5th round pick from last year Cole Madison who head coach Matt LaFluer said he liked last year in Tennessee. I love what the Packers have done to their offensive and defensive lines this year.

The last thing to catch up on is S Josh Jones, a second round pick in 2017 from NC State.

Apparently Jones doesn’t like that he isn’t getting any playing-time, or that would be my guess. Jones couldn’t get on the field for the Packers last year with one of the worst safety situations in the NFL, and he knows with Amos and Savage in town he 1000% won’t be starting. It’s sad to see this because I thought Jones had a lot of potential coming out of college for the Packers. For whatever reason though, he couldn’t stay on the field and he was pretty poor from the get go. He showed some good signs early but those faded quickly. Obviously it would be best for Jones to go to a place where he has a better chance of playing, but I have no idea what the Packers get back for him.

Jones may need to look at new Pittsburgh Steelers LB/S Mark Barron. Barron was a big safety coming out of college that has now turned into this S/ILB hybrid. I think that kind of position is where Jones could make some strides. I wouldn’t expect to see Jones on the field for the Packers in the near future.

Some other quick notes

  • To no surprise, the Smith brothers were starters at OLB.
  • Starting at CB were Tramon Williams and Jaire Alexander. Partially because Kevin King still isn’t at 100%. Josh Jackson was the nickel back. So with everyone healthy, expect Alexander and King as starters with Williams being the nickel guys and Jackson being the dime guy.
  • Oren Burks was starting at ILB opposite Blake Martinez. Looks like he’ll have every chance to take control of that spot. He was also the starter in the nickel package which is interesting.

Go Pack Go
