Well the Green Bay Packers are officially eliminated from playoff contention. It is a sad Monday here in Wisconsin, this is the first time since Rodgers first full season as a starter that the Packers will miss the playoffs when Rodgers plays every game during a season (or at least the majority of them).
I don’t know what to say about this game. It was the same ole Packer team that we have seen play all season, and a lot of it falls on Aaron Rodgers shoulders – to his standards he has been mediocre this year. I don’t know what Rodgers has done for the media this year or in the past but it seems like he is getting almost no criticism at all. If Big Ben has a season or game like this, he’s getting torn apart. Carson Wentz, torn apart. Jared Goff, Pat Mahomes, Russell Wilson, etc. All these guys are getting torn apart but somehow Rodgers has avoided this. Packer fans and the media at the start of the year may have had an excuse, it looked like the same old Packers team, can’t run the ball or play defense, poor play calling, so we need to rely on Rodgers. However, as the year has worn on the Packers have lost game because of their offense, not because of their defense. Rodgers still has played well this year, but not good enough to win games the Packers should have won. Rodgers and the Packers can’t lose to teams like the Lions, Redskins, and Cardinals. They are better than all those teams and need to prove it on the field. Rodgers is better than all those teams QBs (easily) and failed to out play them. Rodgers should have played much better than Trubisky yesterday but he wasn’t. Give the Chicago Bears and that defense some credit, they are a great fucking defense but Rodgers just did perform, yet again.
Most notably, the INT he threw was behind Jimmy Graham and caused the INT. Past few year Rodgers puts that ball on the money. Probably the biggest miss of the game came after the Packers stopped the Bears on a fake punt. He had MVS WIDE OPEN on a bomb, and over threw him. After 20+ weeks of practice with a player, timing shouldn’t be an issue, Rodgers needs to hit him there. Rodgers in the post game press conference did take some of the blame for missed throws but also mentioned some might be due to timing. You have to better this deep into the season.
Moving on from Rodgers, Aaron Jones going out early did not help this team at all even though Jamal Williams played a pretty good game in his absence. Jones apparently suffered a MCL sprain likely means he will be shut down for the year. Hopefully next year whoever the HC and OC are look to make Jones the focal point of this offense. Jones should be a player who is getting 20+ touches almost every game. He is a guy who can have 1,000+ yards rushing and catch over 50 balls, he is that talented.
I’ll do a full look ahead at the end of the season for the Packers but this team needs some god damn depth at OL. The Bears DL, although one of the best in the league was getting good pressure on Rodgers almost all game. There were a few times the Packers OL held up well, but that looked like it was mostly due to the Packers running a little hurry up and a tired defensive front from the Bears.
Defensively the Packers played another solid game without two of their best players in Kenny Clark and Mike Daniels. The Packers CBs played a good enough game but their safeties need some help. Tramon Williams is solid, but he is nothing special back there. Josh Jones on the other hand is the opposite of solid, not sure what that is, like a liquid? He’s liquid? Guy was getting beat all day, and I think his worst play happened early on. The Bears got like a 15 yard gain to get a first down, Jones laid a decent hit to knock the player out of bounds then continued to celebrate like he just made a 4th down stop. Shut your mouth, run back to the huddle, they just got a fucking 15 yard gain and you look like a moron celebrating that hit. Not that Jones is the only guy who does this in the NFL, but christ, can guys just stop doing this.
- Joe Philbin, no challenges? Whats wrong with you.
- Davante Adams is a top 5 WR in the league. No debate, he’s there. Dude balls out every game no matter who tries to cover him.
- Tyler Lancaster is a solid backup DT for the Packers. A rookie free agent I think he can be good guy for some depth on the Packers DL going into next year.
- Jimmy Graham is trying to do his best Rob Gronkowski impression. Not sure if Graham is back next year, but if he is, the Packers really need to run more plays for him in the Red Zone. Defenses are not afraid of him.
- Rodgers was really putting out a good word in his post game comments for keeping Randall Cobb next year. Much like Clay Matthews, I think both guys can help this team in the future but they need to take some big pay cuts if they want to stay in Green Bay.
